Leinster, Western Australia

Leinster is a town in the northern goldfields area of Western Australia. It is 4 km east of the Goldfields Highway, in the Shire of Leonora local government area, 968 kilometres northeast of the state capital, Perth. At the 2006 census, Leinster had a population of 732. The town was established in 1976 by the Agnew Gold Mining Company as a dormitory town for workers at its nickel mine and was named for the nearby Leinster Downs station.

Agnew Gold Mine

The Agnew Gold Mine is a gold mine located 3 km west of Agnew, Western Australia. It is owned by the South African mining company Gold Fields. It is one of two mines the company operates in Australia, the other being the St Ives Gold Mine. Ore is mined at Agnew in the under ground Waroonga complex and the open pit Songvang operation.

Vivien, Western Australia

Vivien is an abandoned town located between Leinster and Leonora in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Initially the town was known as Harris which was developed in 1903 then extended in 1905 when the local progress association asked for additional lots to be surveyed. It was around this time the town became known as Vivien, since the Vivien Gold Mine and the Vivien Gem Reef were both located close by. The townsite was gazetted in 1906.

Agnew, Western Australia

Agnew is a town in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. It is located 982 kilometres north-east of Perth and the closest populated town is Leinster. The town is named after a miner, John A. Agnew, who worked for a local mining firm, Bewick, Moreing & Co. The townsite was declared in 1936. Having no official post office in 1936, an unofficial one operated two days per week but only offered limited service.
