Surazh

Surazh is a town and the administrative center of Surazhsky District, Bryansk Oblast, Russia, located on the Iput River 177 kilometers southwest of Bryansk. Population: 11,640; 12,046; 12,559; 1,599 (1897). It was first mentioned in the 17th century as the village of Surazhichi (Суражичи); later as a sloboda. Since 1781 it has been known as the town of Surazh-na-Iputi (Сураж-на-Ипути), and since 1797—as simply Surazh.

Surazhsky District is an administrative and municipal district, one of the twenty-seven in Bryansk Oblast, Russia. It is located in the west of the oblast. The area of the district is 1,120 square kilometers . Its administrative center is the town of Surazh. Population: 24,623; 27,223; 31,697. The population of Surazh accounts for 47.3% of the district's total population.
