Sigismund Ernst Richard Krone was a German naturalist, zoologist, spelunker, archaeologist and researcher born on 18 June 1861 in Dresden, Germany. The municipality was founded in 1992 after the merger of the tract of Ilha Comprida that belonged to the city of Cananéia with the section of the island that was administered by the city of Iguape.
