Karviná

Karviná is a city in Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, on the Olza River. It is administrative center of Karviná District. Karviná lies in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia and is one of the most important coal mining centers in the Czech Republic. Together with neighboring towns it forms industrial Ostrava-Karviná Coal Basin. It has 65,141 inhabitants (2001 census). 8.5% of the population are Slovaks and 8% of the population are Poles.

Fryštát

Fryštát is a town in the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic, now administratively a part of the city of Karviná. Until 1948 it was a separate town. It lies on the Olza River, in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia.

Karviná District

Karviná District is a district within the Moravian-Silesian Region of the Czech Republic. Its administrative center is the city of Karviná. It was created by 1960 reform of administrative divisions in the area of former Fryštát District. Karviná District is part of Czech Silesia. The Karviná district is facing fast population decline, only in first half of 2010 the decrease was 1688 people.

Darkov

is a village in Karviná District, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic, now administratively a part of the city of Karviná. Till 1948 it was a separate municipality. It lies on the Olza River, in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia. Darkov has a population of 406 (2001). It was first mentioned in a written document in 1447 as Darkow. According to the Austrian census of 1910 the village had 2,305 inhabitants, 2,261 of whom had permanent residence there.

Stonávka

Stonávka is a 33 kilometres -long river in the Karviná District, Moravian-Silesian Region, Czech Republic, in the historical region of Cieszyn Silesia. It is a left tributary of the Olza River, which it enters in Karviná. It flows through Albrechtice and Stonava before entering Karviná. The Těrlicko Dam is located on this river.
