ALERT (medical facility)

ALERT is a medical facility on the edge of Addis Ababa, specializing in Hansen’s disease, also known as “leprosy”. It was originally the All Africa Leprosy Rehabilitation and Training Center (hence the acronym), but the official name is now expanded to include tuberculosis: All Africa Leprosy, Tuberculosis and Rehabilitation Training Centre.

National Archives and Library of Ethiopia

The National Archives and Library of Ethiopia, located in Addis Ababa, is the national library and archives of the country. The library was inaugurated in 1944 by Emperor Haile Selassie and began service with books donated by the king. In 1976, proclamation No. 50/76 gave the library the legal right to collect three copies of every material published in the country. It is currently a unit of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Addis Ababa, sometimes spelled Addis Abeba (the spelling used by the official Ethiopian Mapping Authority), is the capital city of Ethiopia. It is the largest city in Ethiopia, with a population of 3,384,569 according to the 2007 population census with annual growth rate of 3.8%. Based on this estimation, the population on the year 2013 would be 4,156,251. This datum has been increased from the originally published 2,738,248 figure and appears possibly largely underestimated still.

Addis Mercato (Amharic for "New Market", popularly just Mercato, from the Italian for "market") is the name for the large open-air marketplace in the Addis Ketema district of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and for the neighborhood in which it is located. Mercato is the largest open air market in Africa, covering several square miles and employing an estimated 13,000 people in 7,100 business entities.
