Gorze Abbey was a Benedictine monastery in Gorze in the present arrondissement of Metz-Campagne, near Metz in Lorraine. It was prominent as the source of a monastic reform movement in the 930s.

Battle of Fort Driant

The Battle of Fort Driant was a constituent battle in the 1944 Battle of Metz, during the Lorraine Campaign and the greater Siegfried Line Campaign. The battle was on occupied French territory between the liberation forces of the United States Third Army under the command of George S. Patton and the occupation forces of Nazi Germany. It is the site of one of Patton's few setbacks in World War II, along with the rest of the Metz battle.

Red Lands

The Red Lands form a geographic region in southern and south-western Luxembourg. They are so called for their red iron-laden earth. The Red Lands roughly correspond with the southern part of the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, along the border with France. Geologically, the Red Lands are sedimentary, mostly sandstones and conglomerates, formed in the Middle Jurassic epoch.

Lorraine (region)

Lorraine is one of the 27 régions of France. The administrative region has two cities of equal importance, Metz and Nancy. Metz is considered to be the official capital since that is where the regional parliament is situated. However, Nancy's status as ducal and cultural capital of the independent Lorraine for most of a millenium, in many respects still makes it the "unofficial" capital of Lorraine as a historical nation of autonomous people and heritage.
