Paris–Roubaix

Paris–Roubaix is a one-day professional bicycle road race in northern France near the Belgian frontier. From its beginning in 1896 until 1967 it started in Paris and ended in Roubaix (hence the name); since 1968 the start city has been Compiègne (about 60 kilometres north-east from Paris centre) whilst the finish is still in Roubaix. Famous for rough terrain and cobblestones, it is one of the 'Monuments' or Classics of the European calendar, and contributes points towards the UCI World Ranking.

Marchiennes Abbey

Marchiennes Abbey was a French monastery located on the Scarpe in Marchiennes. It was founded around 630 by Adalbaud, duc de Douai, and Irish monks, disciples of saint Columbanus, on the advice of Saint Amand. One of its founders was Rictrude, who made it double monastery in 643. In around 1024 it became monastery of men again and adopted the Benedictine rule. On the birth of the town of Marchiennes the abbey became its economic motor until being suppressed in 1791 during the French Revolution.

Scarpe (river)

The Scarpe is a river in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France, left tributary of the Scheldt. It is approximately a hundred kilometers long, of which two thirds has been turned into canals. The source of the river is at Berles-Monchel near Aubigny-en-Artois. It flows through the cities Arras, Douai and Saint-Amand-les-Eaux. The river ends at Mortagne-du-Nord where it flows into the Scheldt. The river and its valley were important battlegrounds in the First World War.

Wez-Velvain

Wez-Velvain is a village in the municipality of Brunehaut, which is located in the Belgian province of Hainaut. The municipality of Brunehaut was created in 1976 by the merging of the former municipalities of Wez-Velvain, Hollain, Laplaigne, Bléharies, Rongy, Lesdain, Howardries, Guignies and Jollain-Merlin. Wez-Velvain is made of two hamlets named after the Latin word vallis, "a valley", and fel vain, meaning "a fertile plain".
