Cap Gris Nez

Cap Gris Nez (literally grey nose cape in English, Swartenesse in Dutch, now obsolete; compare other headlands in -ness) is a cape on the Côte d'Opale in the Pas-de-Calais département in northern France. It is between Wissant and Audresselles, in the commune of Audinghen. The cliffs of the Cap are the closest point of France to England - 34 km from their English counterparts at Dover.

Fort Mahon

Fort Mahon, which is known locally as Fort Vauban, is a fort located on the coast of the Strait of Dover, by the commune of Ambleteuse, in the Pas-de-Calais, northern France. It was built at the end of the 17th century by the military architect Vauban. Slack (river)

The Slack is a 22 km long river in the Pas-de-Calais department, in northern France. It rises at Hermelinghen on Mount Binôt, flows through Rinxent, Marquise, Beuvrequen, Slack (village near Ambleteuse) and flows into the English Channel in Ambleteuse next to Fort Mahon.

Saint-Inglevert Airfield

Saint-Inglevert Airfield is a general aviation airfield at Saint-Inglevert, Pas-de-Calais, France. In the First World War an airfield was established near Saint-Inglevert by the Royal Flying Corps, later passing to the Royal Air Force on formation and thus becoming RAF Saint Inglevert. In 1920, a civil airfield was established on a different site which was a designated customs airfield. During the Second World War, Saint-Inglevert was occupied by the Royal Air Force and the Armée de l'Air.

SM U-109

U-109 was a submarine in the Imperial German Navy in World War I, taking part in the First Battle of the Atlantic. The building contract was confirmed 5 May 1916, and was awarded to Germaniawerft, Kiel. A Type 93 boat, she was launched 25 September 1917 and commissioned 7 November. She was under the command of Otto Ney. On 28 January 1918, she was sunk in the English Channel, possibly by a mine, while diving to avoid ships from the Dover Patrol (particularly drifter H.M. Beryl III).
