Château de Pierrefonds

The Château de Pierrefonds is a castle situated in the commune of Pierrefonds in the Oise département of France. It is on the southeast edge of the Forest of Compiègne, north east of Paris, between Villers-Cotterêts and Compiègne. The Château de Pierrefonds includes most of the characteristics of defensive military architecture from the Middle Ages, though it underwent a major restoration in the 19th century.

Glade of the Armistice

The Glade of the Armistice (French: Clairière de l'Armistice) is a war memorial in the Forest of Compiègne. It stands on the spot where in 1918 the Germans signed the armistice that ended World War I. During World War II, Adolf Hitler deliberately chose the same location for the French and Germans to sign the Second Armistice at Compiègne after Germany won the Battle of France. Today, Glade of the Armistice contains a statue of Ferdinand Foch and the Alsace-Lorraine Memorial.

Second Armistice at Compiègne

The Second Armistice at Compiègne was signed at 18:50 on 22 June 1940 near Compiègne, France, between Nazi Germany and the French Third Republic. Following the decisive German victory in the Battle of France (10 May–21 June 1940), it established a German occupation zone in Northern France that encompassed all English Channel and Atlantic Ocean ports and left the remainder "free" to be governed by the French.

Armistice with Germany

The armistice between the Allies and Germany - also known as the Armistice of Compiègne after the location it was signed - was an agreement that ended the fighting in the First World War.
