It was formed on 1 January 2008 from the former Ämter Hennstedt, Lunden and Tellingstedt. The Amt is named after the Eider River. In January 2008, it was merged with the Amt Eddelak-Sankt Michaelisdonn to form the Amt Burg-Sankt Michaelisdonn.
