Aitoliko Lagoon

The Aitoliko Lagoon (Greek: Λιμνοθάλασσα Αιτωλικού Limnothalassa Aitolikou) is a lagoon located in the south of Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece. It forms a part of the Acheloos river. In the middle of the lagoon is a small island which has a city that is named Aitoliko. The road linking Astakos and the GR-5/E55 (Antirrio - Agrinio - Ioannina lies to the south. The Acheloos river flows to the west. The lagoon was created by an earthquake and is 28 metres deep. Its water is sweet.

Aitoliko Railway Station (Greek: Σιδηροδρομικός Σταθμός Αιτωλικού, Sidirodromikos Stathmos Etolikou) was a railway station in the town of Aitoliko in Aetolia-Acarnania, Greece, the station served two rail lines: Kryoneri–Agrinio railway, at km 26.890 from Kryoneri Limena. Aitoliko–Katochi railway, the starting point of the line The station took its name from the town that it served, and it was located east of the island which contains the town centre of Aitoliko.

Missolonghi–Aitoliko Lagoons

The Missolonghi-Aitoliko lagoons complex is located in the north part of the Gulf of Patras in the central west coast of Greece. It is one of the most important Mediterranean lagoons. It is a shallow area of 150 km, extended between the Acheloos and Evinos rivers. It is protected by the Ramsar Convention and it is also included in the Natura 2000 network.

Lake Lysimachia

Lysimachia is a lake located west of Agrinio, Greece. The Acheloos river flows to the northwest with an artificial flow now to the east and an old natural flow near the lake. The area is 13.2 km², it is 17 km in length, its depth is around 9 m. East of the lake features another lake in the Great Aetolian Fields, the Trichonida which has an ecosystem. The lake offers a view of the city of Agrinio to the southeast.

Achelous River

The Achelous, also Acheloos, is a river in western Greece. It formed the boundary between Acarnania and Aetolia of antiquity. It empties into the Ionian Sea. In ancient times its spirit was venerated as the river god Achelous. Herodotus, taking notice of the shoreline-transforming power of the Acheloos River, even compared it to the Nile in this respect: 'There are other rivers as well which, though not as large as the Nile, have had substantial results.
