Monti Sicani

The Monti Sicani are a mountain chain in the central-southern Sicily, southern Italy, included between the Agrigento and Palermo. The name also indicates a series of comuni (municipalities) lying in the area. The territory is characterized by a hilly area, clay and sandstone being the predominant rocks, used for pasture, and a proper mountain area, above 900 m of altitude, with Mesozoic limestone rocks.

Portella della Ginestra massacre

The Portella della Ginestra massacre was one of the more violent acts in the history of modern Italian politics, when 11 people were killed and 27 wounded during May Day celebrations in Sicily on May 1, 1947, in the municipality of Piana degli Albanesi. Those held responsible were the bandit and separatist leader Salvatore Giuliano and his band – although their motives and intentions are still a matter of controversy.

Lago di Piana degli Albanesi

The Lago di Piana degli Albanesi, (in Albanian language liqeni i Horës së Arbëreshëvet), is an artificial lake in Piana degli Albanesi, in the Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. The lake was made to produce electricity. It was built from 1920 to 1923 by hand. The output water jump 475 m lower until the "Casuzze" hydro-electrical plant near Palermo. In the sixties, to supply the increased demand of electricity, a newer plant just near the dam was built. The plant of Casuzze is still in function.
