Interesting facts about this location

Troja railway station

Troja railway station opened in 1896, closed in 1975, reopened in 1977 and closed for good in 1978. It was on the Bog Walk to Port Antonio branch line, 31 miles from the Kingston terminus, and served the surrounding agricultural community, providing a means for bananas to reach and be exported from Port Antonio. It was vandalised sometime after closure.

Richmond Farm Correctional Centre

Richmond Farm Prison houses up to 235 first offenders serving long-term sentences. It once incorporated a large banana farm, which was later destroyed. As of 2006, an attempt was under way regenerate the farm with crops including bananas, corn, calaloo, string beans and cucumber. Its most famous former ex inmate is probably Bunny Wailer who spent 14 months there in 1967/8. It is operated by the Department of Correctional Services for the Ministry of National Security.
