Cockpit Country

Cockpit Country is an area in Jamaica specifically Trelawny which provided a natural defensive area used by Maroons to establish communities outside the control of Spanish or British colonialists. Cockpit Country is pockmarked with steep-sided hollows, as much as 120 metres deep in places, which are separated by conical hills and ridges.

Accompong

Accompong is a historical maroon village, located in the hills of St. Elizabeth Parish in Jamaica, consolidated by a treaty in 1739. It is located in one of the two areas where runaway slaves settled, originally with the Taínos, isolated enough to be safe first from the Spanish and then later from the British. The town of Accompong was named after the Maroon leader Accompong, who was the brother of a number of other Maroon leaders: Quao, Cuffy, Cudjoe, and Nanny, from an Ashanti family.

Black River (Jamaica)

The Black River is one of the longest rivers in Jamaica. At a length of 53.4 km, it was believed to be the longest until it was discovered that the Rio Minho was 92.8 km long. Its name refers to the darkness of the river bed caused by thick layers of decomposing vegetation. Over 100 species of birds have been recorded in the Black River morass.
