1995 Chiapas earthquake

The 1995 Chiapas earthquake occurred on October 20, 1995 at 20:38 local time . The epicenter was located in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, near Tuxtla Gutiérrez. It had a magnitude of Mw 7.1, or ML 6.5. Building damage was reported. Around 70 people were reported injured. In Tuxtla Gutiérrez, telephone and electricity services were momentarily interrupted. This earthquake could be felt strongly in Mexico City and in many parts of southern Mexico.

Sima de las Cotorras

Sima de las Cotorras, Spanish for Sinkhole of Parrots, is a giant circular sinkhole in the karst plateau of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It measures 160 metres in diameter and 140 metres in depth, and is noted for the thousands of green parakeets inhabiting the trees at its bottom and the ancient paintings on its cliff wall 70 metres underground.

The Regional Museum of Anthropology and History of Chiapas (Museo Regional de Antropología e Historia de Chiapas) is the largest museum in Tuxtla Gutiérrez in Chiapas and one of the most important of its kind in Mexico.
