Dwingeloo Radio Observatory
The Dwingeloo Radio Observatory, is a single-dish radio telescope with a diameter of 25 m. Construction started in 1954, and the telescope was completed in 1956. At that time it was the largest radio telescope in the world. As of 2000, it was no longer in operation in an official capacity and since August 2009 is officially a Dutch industrial heritage monument. Hijken is a town in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is a part of the municipality of Midden-Drenthe, and lies about 13 km south of Assen. In 2001, the town of Hijken had 322 inhabitants. The built-up area of the town was 0.12 km², and contained 117 residences. The statistical area "Hijken", which also can include the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 890. The town is also known for its surrounding Neanderthal settlements.
