Interesting facts about this location

Kingston, New Zealand

Kingston is a small town at the southernmost end of Lake Wakatipu, just north of the border of Otago and Southland, in New Zealand's South Island. Though located inside Otago, it is often considered part of Southland. It is 47 kilometres south of Queenstown by a road which winds between the lake to the west and The Remarkables mountains to the east. It is 70 kilometres north of Lumsden, and close to the headwaters of the Mataura River.

Athol, New Zealand

Athol is a small town in Southland, New Zealand. It is located 55 km south of Queenstown, half way between Lumsden and Kingston. The name of Athol, is rumored to be derived from either Harry Athol, the owner of the township's first public house, or after Athol, Perthshire, Scotland, the home town of early local landowner W.B. Rogers.

The Remarkables

The Remarkables are a mountain range and skifield in Otago, South Island of New Zealand. Located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, the range lives up to its name by rising sharply to create an impressive backdrop for the waters. The range is clearly visible from the nearby town of Queenstown. High point in the range is Double Cone (2319 metres) with Ben Nevis (2230 metres, named after the Scottish mountain of the same name) further south in the Hector mountains.

Eyre Creek (New Zealand)

Eyre Creek is a river in the Southland Region of New Zealand’s South Island. It is a tributary of the Mataura River with a braided channel and with its confluence near the small town of Athol. It rises in the Eyre Mountains south-west of Lake Wakatipu. It has been identified as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International because it supports breeding colonies of the endangered Black-billed Gull.
