Geography of Romania

With an area of 238,400 square kilometers, Romania is the twelfth largest country in Europe. Situated in the northeastern portion of the Balkan Peninsula, the country is halfway between the equator and the North Pole and equidistant from the westernmost part of Europe—the Atlantic Coast—and the most easterly—the Ural Mountains. Battle of Romania

The Battle of Romania in World War II comprised several operations in or around Romania in 1944, as part of the Eastern Front. The Red Army launched two offensives against combined German-Romanian defenses in an attempt to reclaim the Moldavian SSR and open a way into the Balkans: The First Jassy-Kishinev Offensive between April 8 and June 6, which ended in failure as the Axis forces successfully resisted the invasion.

Saschiz is a commune in Mureş County, Romania. It has a population of 2,048: 88% Romanians, 5% Germans, 4% Hungarians and 3% Roma. It is composed of three villages: Cloașterf (Klosdorf; Miklóstelke), Mihai Viteazu (Zoltendorf; Zoltán) and Saschiz. The commune is part of the villages with fortified churches in Transylvania, designated in 1993 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
