Magadan-13 Airport

Magadan-13 Airport is a small airport in Russia located 10 km northeast of Magadan. It handles most propeller-driven transports. Regular passenger Ilyushin Il-14 aircraft were flying here in the 1950s and early 1960s. In the 1970s and 1980s it was a busy airport for charter operations which served geological expeditions, firefighters, and local transport routes.

Mask of Sorrow

The Mask of Sorrow (Russian: Маска скорби, Maska skorbi) is a monument perched on a hill above Magadan, Russia, commemorating the many prisoners who suffered and died in the Gulag prison camps in the Kolyma region of the Soviet Union during the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. It consists of a large concrete statue of a face, with tears coming from the left eye in the form of small masks. The right eye is in the form of a barred window.

Sokol Airport

Sokol Airport is an airport in Sokol in Magadan Oblast, Russia. The airport is located 70 km (43 mi) north of the Magadan city center. The airport is sometimes confused with Dolinsk-Sokol air base in Sakhalin Island, which was home to the fighters that shot down Korean Air Flight 007. In 1991, the town gained exposure to the Western world with the inauguration of Alaska Airlines flights to the United States using McDonnell Douglas MD-80 jets.

Nagayevo, Magadan

Nagayevo was an urban-type settlement on the territory of what is now Magadan Oblast; a predecessor of the city of Magadan. It was founded in 1929 on the shore of Nagayevo Bay. It rapidly grew, and in 1930 it was granted urban-type settlement status. In 1931, it became the administrative center of Okhotsk-Evenk National Okrug. In 1932, the settlement of Magadan was founded just 2.5 kilometers from Nagayevo. In 1939, they were both merged into the town of Magadan.
