USS Runner (SS-275)

USS Runner (SS-275) was a Gato-class submarine, the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the runner, an amberfish inhabiting subtropical waters, so called for its rapid leaps from the water. Runner's keel was laid down on 8 December 1941 by the Portsmouth Navy Yard of Kittery, Maine. She was launched on 30 May 1942 sponsored by Mrs. John H. Newton, and commissioned on 30 July 1942 with Commander Frank W. Fenno, Jr. , in command.

Matua (island)

Matua is an uninhabited volcanic island near the center of the Kuril Islands chain in the Sea of Okhotsk in the northwest Pacific Ocean, 16 kilometers across Golovnin Strait from Raikoke. Its name is derived from the Ainu language, from “hellmouth”.

USS Dragonet (SS-293), a Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the dragonet, a family of fishes found in the warm seas of the world. Dragonet (SS-293) was launched 18 April 1943 by Cramp Shipbuilding Co. , Philadelphia, Pa. ; sponsored by Mrs. J. E. Gingrich; and commissioned 6 March 1944, Commander Jack Hayden Lewis in command.
