Western Province is one of Rwanda's five provinces. It was created in early January 2006 as part of a government decentralization program that re-organized the country's local government structures. Western Province comprises the former provinces of Cyangugu, Gisenyi, Kibuye, and a small portion of Ruhengeri. The 2008 Lake Kivu earthquake shook several countries in Africa's Great Lakes region at 07:34:12 on February 3. It measured 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale according to the United States Geological Survey and lasted about 15 seconds. The epicentre was 20 kilometres north of Bukavu at Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
