Smedjebacken Municipality

Smedjebacken Municipality (Smedjebackens kommun) is a municipality in Dalarna County in central Sweden. Its seat is located in the town of Smedjebacken. The present municipality was formed in two steps during the last nation-wide local government reform in Sweden. In 1967 the market town (köping) Smedjebacken was reunited with Norrbärke from which it had been detached in 1918. In 1974 Söderbärke was added. The municipality borders to eight other municipalities.

Furbo is a village and area near Smedjebacken in Dalarna, Sweden, including Furbo Lake. The village is surrounded by Scots pine forests. The village dates to the Iron Age. Hunting, gathering and fishing are very popular. The economy revolves around forestry.

Bastnäs

Bastnäs (Swedish: Bastnäs or Bastnäsfältet) is an ore field near Riddarhyttan, Västmanland, Sweden. The mines in Bastnäs were earliest mentioned in 1692. Iron, copper and rare earth elements was extracted from the mines and 4,500 tons of cerium was produced between 1875 and 1888. The chemical element cerium was first discovered in Bastnäs in 1803 by Jöns Jakob Berzelius and Wilhelm Hisinger in the form of its oxide, ceria, and independently in Germany by Martin Heinrich Klaproth.
