2009 Hualien earthquake

The 2009 Hualien earthquake was a Mw 6.4 earthquake which occurred on December 19, 2009 at 21:02:16 (local time) off the coast of Hualian, Taiwan. The Central Weather Bureau put the magnitude at ML 6.8. Strong shaking could be felt in Hualian City (shindo 5 according to Central Weather Bureau) and Taipei (MM IV according to USGS, shindo 4 according to Central Weather Bureau).

Shoufeng, Hualien

Shoufeng is a township of Hualien County, Taiwan. The township sits in the north segment of Huatung Valley between Taiwan's Central Range and Haian Range near the Pacific Ocean. It has 18,000 inhabitants in 6,700 households. Shoufeng is the site of the main campus of the National Dong Hua University.

National Dong Hwa University

The National Dong Hwa University, also Dong Hwa or NDHU (國立東華大學, Guólì dōnghuá dàxué), is a comprehensive public institution of higher learning on Taiwan's east coast. The school serves over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The main Dong Hwa campus is located in Shoufeng township in the Papaya Creek Delta region of Hualien County. The campus sits just north of the Tropic of Cancer about 35 kilometers south of Taroko National Park and 15 kilometers south of Hualien City.

1972 Ruisui earthquake

The 1972 Ruisui earthquake, or the 1972 Juisui earthquake, occurred on April 24, 1972 at 09:57 UTC . The magnitude of this earthquake was given as Ms 7.2 by USGS and ML 6.9 by the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan. The epicenter was located near Ruisui (or spelled as Juisui), Hualian, Taiwan. The intensity was shindo 4 in Taipei and Hualian. 5 people were reported dead. The Ruisui Bridge was destroyed. The water treatment plant in Ruisui was damaged.
