Hamsterley Forest

Hamsterley Forest is a commercial forest in County Durham operated by the Forestry Commission. It is the largest forest in County Durham and covers more than 2000 hectares. Recreational activities are promoted within the forest and are focussed at the eastern end around the visitors centre. In addition to the visitors centre there is an adjacent cafe, an education room, toilet facilities and an independent bike shop called Wood'n'Wheels that also hires out bikes.

County Durham

County Durham is a ceremonial county and (smaller) unitary district in North East England. The county town is Durham. The largest settlement in the ceremonial county (in its own unitary borough) is the town of Darlington. The county has a mixture of mining and farming heritage, as well as a heavy railway industry, particularity in the southeast of the county in Darlington, Shildon and Stockton. Its economy was historically based on coal and iron mining.

Hamsterley, Bishop Auckland

Hamsterley is a village in County Durham, England. It is situated a few miles west of Bishop Auckland. The village lies on a rise above the upper reaches of the Wear valley. To the west of the village the land rises to Hamsterley Common at the eastern edge of the fell country which lies between the valleys of the Wear and the Tees. In the centre of the village is a pub called the Cross Keys.

Fir Tree is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the west of Crook, near the River Wear. Fir Tree has a Petrol Station and 2 pubs, The Duke of York and The Fir Tree Country Hotel. Wear Valley Council say the population census 2007 (for Wear Valley) was 314. It is approximately 2 miles from the small market town of Crook and 6 miles from the large market town Bishop Auckland. Approximately 1 mile NW of the village is the World War II Harperley POW Camp 93.
