River Avon (Hampshire)

The River Avon is a river in the south of England. The river rises in the county of Wiltshire and flows through the city of Salisbury and the county of Hampshire before reaching the English Channel through Christchurch Harbour in the county of Dorset. It is sometimes known as the Salisbury Avon or the Hampshire Avon in order to distinguish it from the various other River Avons in England. It is one of the rivers in Britain in which the phenomenon of anchor ice has been observed.

Battle of Roundway Down

The Battle of Roundway Down was fought on 13 July 1643, during the First English Civil War. A Royalist cavalry force under Lord Wilmot won a crushing victory over the Parliamentarians under Sir William Waller who were besieging Devizes in central Wiltshire, which was defended by Lord Hopton. Roundway Down and Oliver's Castle are about 1.5 km north of Devizes and now form part of the North Wessex Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Morgan's Hill

Morgan's Hill is a 12.6 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1951. It is also a nature reserve of the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust. The main habitat on the site is chalk grassland, largely dominated by Upright Brome (Bromus erectus). Species present which have a particular affinity for the chalk habitat include Chalk milkwort (Polygala calcarea), Horseshoe Vetch (Hippocrepis comosa) and Autumn Gentian (Gentianella amarella).
