Cottonshopeburnfoot

Cottonshopeburnfoot is a hamlet in Redesdale in Northumberland, England. It lies on the A68 road, 2 miles south east of the village of Byrness. The hamlet takes its name from Cottonshope Burn, which flows into the River Rede here. The Pennine Way passes through the hamlet. The place claims to have the longest name in England, closely followed by the neighbouring hamlet of Blakehopeburnhaugh.

A68 road

The A68 is a major road in the United Kingdom, running from Darlington in England to the A720 in Scotland. From Darlington, the road runs north, bypassing Bishop Auckland, and running through West Auckland, Toft Hill and Tow Law, past Consett and Corbridge. The road used to run through the centre of Corbridge but now runs on a new single carriageway alignment to the East of the town, crossing the River Tyne over Styford Bridge.

Otterburn Training Area

The Otterburn Army Training Estate (ATE) was established in 1911 and covers about 242 square kilometres (93 square miles) of the Southern Cheviots. It is owned by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), and used for training some 30,000 soldiers a year. Otterburn is the UK's largest firing range, and is in frequent use — artillery can be clearly heard from Lindisfarne to the north-east and Fontburn Reservoir in the south.

Raid of the Redeswire

The Raid of the Redeswire was a border skirmish between England and Scotland on July 7, 1575 which took place at the Cheviot pass which enters Redesdale, between the English Warden of the Middle Marches; Sir John Forster, Sir George Heron, Keeper of Redesdale and the Keeper of Liddesdale as well as the Scottish Warden; Sir John Carmichael with George Douglas of Bonjedworth. It was the last major battle between the Kingdom of England and the Kingdom of Scotland.
