Leadgate, County Durham

Leadgate is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north-east of Consett. The Roman road Dere Street runs straight through the middle of Leadgate, today this is known as Durham Road and the B6309. The place-name 'Leadgate' is first attested in 1590 and derives from the Old English 'hlidgeat', which means 'swing-gate'. Leadgate was the home of the workers and staff of the Eden colliery which opened in 1844, and was closed on the 18 July 1980.

Benfieldside

Benfieldside is a parish in County Durham, in England. Although not a village in its own right (ecclesiastically it incorporates Shotley Bridge, Bridgehill and much of Blackhill), it is signposted and locally known. The name 'Benfieldside' survives in Benfieldside Road, a school of that name, the local tennis club and the church. Its post office no longer exists, though one remains in the village of Shotley Bridge. The Parish Church is dedicated to St. Cuthberthttp://www. communigate. co.

Knitsley

Knitsley is a hamlet in County Durham, in England. It is situated a short distance to the south of the town of Consett. Local attractions include a pub (some way outside of the village) and a small post box. A telephone box once existed at the end of Hownsgill drive but this was removed many years ago due to lack of use. A railway station existed until 1964 when cutbacks in the railway system dramatically reduced rail services in Britain.

Ebchester

Ebchester is a village in County Durham, in England. It is situated to the north of Consett and to the south east of Whittonstall. The parish church, which is dedicated to St. Ebba is of ambiguous origin, being of partly Norman construction with a foundation, described as being pre-Conquest. Much of the stone in the walls and doorway had been taken from Roman rubble of the fort of Vindomora, on which most of the village is located.
