Alton Line

The Alton Line is a railway line operated by South West Trains. Today Alton station is the terminus of a main line branch, although it was at one time the junction for three lines. The branch leaves the South Western Main Line at Pirbright Junction near Brookwood. The line was electrified (750 V DC third rail) during the interwar years by Southern Railway. Freight trains operated by EWS and steam trains from the Watercress Line (see below) are often seen on the Alton Line.

Pax Hill

Pax Hill, near Bentley, Hampshire, England, was the family home of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement, and his wife, Olave, for over twenty years during the 20th century. It is located at the end of a half-mile drive, off the main A31 road. Pax Hill is a red-bricked house fronting south with higher ground behind. In the Baden-Powell family's time, there was a rose garden with dovecote at one side of the front of the house.

Alton College

Alton College is a sixth form college located in Alton, Hampshire, England. As well as being a sixth form, the college provides an adult education service to the local population as well as catering for students with disabilities from nearby Treloar College. It was built in 1978 and was one of the first institutions in the UK to be a purpose-built sixth form college.

Hangers Way

Hangers Way is a 21 mile long-distance footpath through Hampshire, England from Alton railway station to Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The name Hanger comes from the Old English word hangra, meaning a steeply wooded slope. The footpath passes through Petersfield and Selborne along a series of steep-sided wooded hills, known as “The Hangers”, and can be walked in either direction.
