Mary Towneley Loop

The Mary Towneley Loop is a 47-mile circular route that forms part of the Pennine Bridleway National Trail, along the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshire. It is named in memory of Mary, Lady Towneley, who drew attention to the poor state of England's bridleways and the need for a long-distance route for horse-riders by riding with two friends in September 1986 from Hexham in Northumberland to Ashbourne in Derbyshire. She died in 2001.

Heck, North Yorkshire

Heck is a civil parish in the English county of North Yorkshire. The main settlement is Great Heck, there is also Little Heck at grid reference SE599220. For the purposes of local administration Heck forms part of the district of Selby; before April 1974 it was part of Osgoldcross Rural District and the West Riding of Yorkshire. It was the location of the fatal Selby rail crash.

Great Heck rail crash

The Great Heck rail crash, widely known as the Selby rail crash, was a high-speed train accident that occurred at Great Heck near Selby, North Yorkshire, England on the morning of 28 February 2001. Ten people, including the drivers of both trains involved, were killed and 82 people suffered serious injuries. It remains the worst rail disaster in the 21st century in the United Kingdom.
