Cockenzie and Port Seton

Cockenzie and Port Seton is a unified town in East Lothian, Scotland. It is on the coast of the Firth of Forth, four miles north-east of Musselburgh. The burgh of Cockenzie was created in 1591 by James VI of Scotland. Port Seton harbour was built by George Seton, 11th Lord Seton between 1655 and 1665. The town has a population of 4,493 as of 2001. Since the last Census in 2001, there have been many new houses built. The population is now about 5,460.

Tranent is a town in East Lothian (formerly Haddingtonshire), Scotland. It is near the A1 road and about 11 miles east of Edinburgh. It is one of the oldest towns in East Lothian, and built on a gentle slope, about 300 feet above sea level. Population of the town is about 10,000 people.

Massacre of Tranent

The Massacre of Tranent took place 1797 in the town of Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland. On 28 August, a proclamation was drawn up by local people to object to the enforced recruitment of Scots into the military, to be used either for controlling their own people or for deployment overseas. The proclamation contained the following four clauses:- We declare that we unanimously disapprove of the late Act of Parliament for raising 6000 militiamen in Scotland.

Battle of Prestonpans

The Battle of Prestonpans was the first significant conflict in the Jacobite Rising of 1745. The battle took place at 4 am on 21 September 1745. The Jacobite army loyal to James Francis Edward Stuart and led by his son Charles Edward Stuart defeated the government army loyal to the Hanoverian George II led by Sir John Cope. The inexperienced government troops were outflanked and broke in the face of a highland charge.
