Pont-ar-Gothi

Pont-ar-gothi (otherwise Pontargothi) is a village in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. Pont-ar-gothi takes is name from the bridge where the River Cothi is crossed by the trunk A40 road. It lies some 10 miles east of Carmarthen.

Ystrad Tywi

Ystrad Tywi is an area of south-west Wales situated on the banks of the Tywi river as it approaches the sea to join the Bristol Channel at Carmarthen. Although Ystrad Tywi was never a kingdom itself, it was a valuable territory and was fought over by the various kings of Dyfed, Deheubarth, Seisyllwg, the Kingdom of Gwynedd, the Kingdom of Morgannwg and the Normans. The area now makes up most of the modern county of Carmarthenshire.

Abergwili railway station

District of Carmarthen

Carmarthen was one of six local government districts of the county of Dyfed, west Wales, from 1974 to 1996. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972 from the following parts of the administrative county of Carmarthenshire: The municipal borough of Carmarthen The urban district of Newcastle Emlyn The rural districts of Carmarthen and Newcastle Emlyn In 1996 the district was abolished under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994.
