Silian, Ceredigion

Silian, originally Sulien, is a village in the valley of the River Aeron, Ceredigion, Wales. It is located approximately two miles north-west of Lampeter, on a minor road connecting Pont Creuddun on the A482, and Glan Denys on the A485. Silian is also the name of the parish, which takes its name from Saint Sulien, to whom the village church is consecrated. Bethel Chapel was built in Silian in 1654, and renovated in 1952.

Lampeter railway station

Lampeter railway station, which was situated on the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth Line in Wales, was built to serve the town of Lampeter. It opened in 1866, six years after the line, which reached Aberystwyth in August 1867. Services at the time were limited, with only three trains running every day except Sundays. However, even this service enabled Lampeter to become an important station, although the cost of building the railway was slowly bankrupting the company.

Lampeter Castle

Lampeter Castle was built during the Norman expansion into Wales in the late 1080s. It lies on one of the main trade routes through to the North of Wales and so the market town of Lampeter emerged over time. The castle was razed in the 1130s by a Welsh raid and was never rebuilt. Until the Statute of Wales in 1284 Lampeter was fiercely contested between the English and the Welsh for trade. The motte is to be found at the back of the Old Building at the university.
