Custer Observatory

Custer Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by Custer Institute. Located in Southold, New York (USA), facing Peconic Bay and Shelter Island, Custer's location boasts some of the darkest skies on Long Island. Long Island's oldest public observatory, Custer Institute was founded in 1927 by Charles Wesley Elmer (co-founder of the Perkin-Elmer Optical Company), along with a group of fellow amateur-astronomers. Southold (LIRR station)

Southold is a station along the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road. It is located on Youngs Avenue and Traveler Street, just north of NY 25 (Main Road) in Southold, New York, and is the last LIRR station to be located north of NY 25. The station was originally built on June 14, 1845, then rebuilt in January 1870. The station was closed again in 1958, then burned down in June 1962. When Peconic station closed sometime in 1970, Southold station became the nearest replacement.

Southold is one of ten towns in Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located in the northeastern tip of the county, on the North Fork of Long Island. The population was 21,968 at the 2010 census. The town also contains a hamlet named Southold, which was settled in 1640.

Fort Corchaug Archaeological Site

Fort Corchaug Archeological Site is an archaeological site showing evidence of 17th century contact between Native Americans and Europeans. Fort Corchaug itself was a log fort built by Native Americans. It may have been to protect the Corchaug tribe from other Indians, built with the help of Europeans. Ralph Solecki, a prominent American archaeologist, grew up nearby and conducted several digs on site.
