Troops first trained at Camp Dawson during that summer and continued until the entry of the U.S.

It was formed from Monongalia County in 1818 and named for Virginia Governor James Patton Preston. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,520. Its county seat is Kingwood. For media market purposes the county is defined entirely as part of the Pittsburgh market.
