The town is situated on the junction of the D'Aguilar and the Bunya Highways. At the 2006 census, Kingaroy had a population of 7,620, a significant increase from the 2001 census figure of 7,147.

Immediately to the east of the town is the Wooroolin Wetland, which is classified as a ‘palustrine’ wetland - a non-tidal, inland, non-arid, seasonally flooded, vegetated swamp.
