The original foundation existed from 1114 to the time of the French Revolution. It was one of the most important Cistercian abbeys in the south of France. Iniitially, in 1114, it was a Benedictine foundation set up by Géraud de Sales. It became subject to Clairvaux Abbey in 1144 or 1145.

The Save is a 143 km long river in southern France, left tributary of the Garonne. Its source is in the northern foothills of the Pyrenees, south of Lannemezan.
