Colmonell

Colmonell is a small village in the Stinchar Valley, South Ayrshire. The nearest town is Girvan, ten miles away. The River Stinchar runs through the valley and the Colmonell area boasts three ruined castles: Craigneil Castle (thirteenth century), Kirkhill Castle (sixteenth century) and Knockdolian Castle (sixteenth century). The village has a small primary school, pub, fire station and village church. With a small population, Colmonell is a close community.

River Stinchar

The River Stinchar is a river in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It flows south west from the Galloway Forest Park to enter the Firth of Clyde at Ballantrae, about 20 km south south east of Ailsa Craig. It is reputed poet Robert Burns fished the river, and despite being impressed by its beauty, was unable to find words to rhyme with the name.

Ballantrae

Ballantrae is a community in Carrick, South Ayrshire, Scotland. The name probably comes from the Scottish Gaelic Baile na Tràgha, meaning the "town by the beach". It is the setting of the novel The Master of Ballantrae by Robert Louis Stevenson. Geologically, Ballantrae has lent its name to a subdivision of the Arenig group, which is the name applied to the lowest stage of the Ordovician System.
