Dalmellington

Dalmellington is a market town in Ayrshire, Scotland. In 2001 it had a population of 1407. The town owes its origins to the fault line separating the Southern Uplands of Scotland from the Central Lowlands. Dalmellington sits at the issue of a river from the uplands into Dalmellington Moss plain. The town has a history as a rest area, market town, weaving centre and mining village.

Patna, East Ayrshire

Patna, population 3,500, is a village in East Ayrshire, Scotland, straddling the traditional districts of Carrick and Kyle. It was established in 1802 by William Fullarton to provide housing for workers on the coalfields of his estate. Fullarton's father had worked as an employee of the British East India Company, and the town is named after the city of Patna in India.

Loch Doon

Loch Doon is a body of water, in Carrick, Scotland. The River Doon issues from its northern end, while the loch itself receives waters from Loch Enoch via Eglin Lane. In the 13th century, it was a site of a castle owned by the Earls of Carrick. During the Scottish Wars of Independence it was held by one Gille Brighde, Sir Gilbert de Carrick, a native Carrick nobleman who surrendered it to the English. It was soon recovered by the Scots.

Polnessan

Polnessan (Scottish Gaelic: Poll an Easain) is a small rural village in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Polnessan has a population of 87, and is located one kilometre north of Patna on the A713 road. Polnessan has no facilities, except for a play park which is due for upgrading, and is effectively a long row of council housing. The houses were originally built for miners and their families on the Houldsworth pit, a nearby coal mine.
